Evonne Alvarez
 has extensive academic and magnet school experience. Currently, Ms. Alvarez is Principal at New World School of the Arts (NWSA) in Miami, Florida. New World is a high school created by Florida State Statute in 1984 with three institutional partners, Miami Dade County Public Schools, Miami Dade College, and the University of Florida. The mission of the high school, as a visual and performing arts magnet school, is to identify talented students through the auditions process. With sixteen years of administrative experience, she has served as principal, assistant principal and faculty in various middle schools and high schools in the Miami-Dade County Public Schools system. A seasoned academic administrator and educator, Alvarez is responsible for planning, organizing, administering and directing academic and operational activities at the high school level, which are essential to the operation of NWSA.

Prior to her current position, she has been the Principal at two middle schools, one of them a magnet visual and performing art school in Miami Dade County, for a total of ten years. Her first assignment was in 2007 at Campbell Drive Middle School then a fragile neighborhood school. As the Assistant Principal of Curriculum at South Dade Senior, in 2004, she wrote the Magnet School’s Assistance Program (MSAP) grant that transitioned the school into a magnet school program with the incorporation of the IB Program. At Coral Gables Senior High in 2001, she managed the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program among other programs offered by the school.

Ms. Alvarez is cognizant of the impact that magnet schools have upon the academic and social lives of students as well as the community at large. The problem-solving skills her position entails along with her professional growth have allowed her to create a thriving educational environment. As a magnet school administrator, Ms. Alvarez will continue to deliver the best educational experience and is willing to share best practices with others.

Additionally, she has garnered numerous awards and recognitions through her involvement with the South Florida community. In 2012 she was named Principal of the Year for the South Miami Feeder Pattern, Principal of the Year 2013 for the Miami High Feeder Pattern and recognized with the Race to the Top School Site Administrator Award in 2011, 2012 and 2013. In 2014, she received the Paul Heithaus Outstanding Administrator Award from the Dade Arts Educator Association. Ms. Alvarez holds a B.A. in Behavior and Social Sciences from the University of Maryland, College Park; a M.S. in Educational Leadership from Nova Southeastern University, and is currently pursuing her Ed.D as a part of an MDCPS cohort initiative in the Executive K-12 Administration program from the College of William and Mary.
