Leading up to #GivingTuesday on December 3 we are going to highlight the many reasons why magnet schools deserve your support. Magnet schools empower students by allowing them to choose academic programs that excite their imagination and prepare them for college and future careers. They allow teachers to develop and nourish their instructional skills through specialized professional development. They empower principals to manage and design their schools in unique ways. Magnet schools also help communities break down racial and socioeconomic barriers and provide access to high quality schools for all students.

Can you think of other ways magnet schools empower students, teachers, principals, and families?

Successful Magnet Schools - specialized theme-based curriculum
November 21

As we continue the countdown to #GivingTuesday we would like to highlight the success of magnet schools. These programs exemplify the best in public school education and feature specialized theme-based curriculum in areas such as Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), Fine and Performing Arts, Careers and Technology, Business, Finance, Communications, Montessori, and International Baccalaureate.

There are countless examples of successful magnet schools in almost every community across America. For example, the Mabel Hoggard Math and Science Elementary School in Las Vegas, Nevada is classified as a high achieving school by the Clark County School District and has made Adequate Yearly Progress every year since 2006. Mabel Hoggard has also succeeded at increasing the achievement gap, and its African American and Hispanic students consistently outperform other schools in the district on yearly state assessments.

To learn more about this and other successful magnet programs visit our website www.magnet.edu and search Success Stories or Magnets in the News. Please be sure to also donate to MSA on Giving Tuesday, December 3 and help us achieve our goal of raising $10,000 for three projects. http://bit.ly/I1keVV

What are people saying about magnets schools?
November 22

There are now 11 days until Giving Tuesday. Obviously we can think of a thousand reasons to support MSA, but what are other people saying about magnet schools? The president of the National Education Association and former math teacher had this to say,"Magnet schools are one of the great, yet unheralded, success stories in American public education. The research is clear that magnet schools foster high achievement for students from diverse backgrounds."

On the opposite end of the political spectrum, Michael Petrilli of the Thomas B. Fordham Institute says,"For forty years, magnet schools have been beacons of light in many of America's great cities. Now they are helping to fuel a renaissance in urban communities, drawing middle class families of all backgrounds to diverse, walkable neighborhoods. Simply put, they are national treasures.”
