Sidener Academy for High Ability Students opened its doors in the fall of 2008 for students who are in need of a more challenging curriculum. Theodore Potter Spanish Immersion Elementary Magnet School (Grades K-6)
Center for Inquiry at School #2 (IB PYP & MYP) is an award-winning K-8 Magnet Option School and is home of the first authorized International Baccalaureate Primary and Middle Years Programmes in Indiana. The focus of the magnet is inquiry based learning. Our multi-age classrooms employ Socratic seminar during daily community meetings, inquiry strategies that facilitate content as a means of personal discovery, and explore lengthy lists of student “wonderings”. Learning is experiential and often includes field trips, guest speakers, and service learning opportunities. Interpersonal interactions are valued. Students are engaged in interconnected and authentic assessments with their teachers and peers. A workshop approach is utilized within our classrooms during Writer’s Workshop, literature discussions during Reading Workshop, and math investigations during math. Project Seed experts work with students in grades 4-6 to develop algebraic thinking. Our transdisciplinary IB units are taught using the best practices and tools of inquiry based instruction. Students study Spanish and/or Mandarin Chinese foreign languages. The Center for Inquiry teaching staff is composed of talented, award-winning professionals. Members of the staff have distinguished themselves in many ways including: authoring books and magazine articles, winning local, state and national recognition, and presenting at national conferences.
The Theodore Potter Spanish Immersion Magnet is a cultural jewel in the heart of Indianapolis offering kindergarten to sixth grade students the unique opportunity to acquire a second language. Highly qualified English and Spanish teachers utilize proven strategies in delivering an exciting academic experience. Participation in the immersion program comes with the expectation that all students will learn to read, write, solve problems, communicate, and process information naturally in two languages. Native Spanish-speaking teachers provide a challenging nontraditional method of learning mathematics and science using only their native language. English-speaking teachers deliver reading, language arts and social studies instruction in a more traditional setting. Theodore Potter classrooms are equipped with the latest technological tools. Each classroom is equipped with a Promethean ACTIVboard that ensures reaching every style of learning through participation, interaction and attention of the learner. The ACTIVotes, a student learner response device provides the teacher instant feedback with data and the ability to adjust teaching methods and revision of content as needed. The use of Promethean ACTIVboards, podcasting, PowerPoint, distance learning, wireless laptops, and instant Internet access are tools used by teachers to hook and engage even the most reluctant student.

Students study all of the major disciplines, that are part of the MYP framework including languages, humanities, sciences, mathematics, arts, technology, and physical education, organized around a set of perspectives known as areas of interaction. The IB Learner Profile guides the everyday attitudes and actions. Inquiry based learning is pervasive throughout all curricular areas.
