Maree Sneed, Esq.

Opening Session
Racially Diverse Schools within a Racially Divided Society:
What They Meant to Us, the Country, and Our Future

There are many areas of U.S. public policy in which decisions made by those in power run counter to what the social science evidence tells us they should be to solve the problems we all care about.  Nowhere is this reality more stark than in the area of school diversity and the establishment of federal, state or even local policies to support and sustain racially or socio-economically balanced schools and/or school districts.  Drawing on some of the most powerful evidence to date, Professor Wells will provide an overview of the robust body of research on the long-term effects of school desegregation on students who matriculate through diverse schools and the nation as a whole.  She will also discuss how this growing body of research can and should have a powerful impact on current and future educational policies and for our increasingly diverse, 21st Century society.

Dr. Amy Stuart Wells, Professor of Sociology and Education
Teachers College, Columbia University ~ New York, NY

Opening Session
What I Told Secretary of Education Duncan About School Diversity and Student Outcomes:
Practical Implications for Magnet Schools

- Broad findings about the positive relationship of school and classroom diversity to a host of long- and short-term student outcomes (general findings).

- The opportunities for diversity AND excellence that magnet schools offer their communities at this point in time.

- The constitutionally permissable enrollment strategies for creating, implementing, and sustaining diverse magnets (based on Justice Kennedy's controlling opinion in the Supreme Court's 2007 decision that recognized fostering diversity and avoiding segregation are compelling state interests).

- Developing federal, state, and local stakeholders as partners or collaborators in creating, implementing, and sustaining diverse magnet schools.

Dr. Roslyn Arlin Mickelson, Professor of Sociology
University of North Carolina at Charlotte ~ Charlotte, NC

Growing STEM Panel Discussion:
Branching Out With STEM To Create High Achieving Magnet Schools

Broward County Public Schools is a recipient of the 2010-2013 Magnet Schools Assistance Program Grant awarded by the USDOE, Office of Innovation.  This presentation will focus on the highlights of Broward's MSAP project to create high rigor STEM Magnet programs at six middle schools.  The following schools will focus on improving student achievement, increasing enrollment & diversity as key elements within the project: Apollo, Lauderhill, Margate, McNicol, Parkway, and Silver Lakes Middle Schools.  The "Growing STEM" project will provide all students with opportunities to participate in STEM instruction, project-based learning activities, field experiences, summer camps, competitions, and career/post-secondary exploration related to the new theme.  Teachers and staff will participate in a variety of STEM related professional development activities throughout the project.  A major focus will be to ensure integration of STEM concepts across the curriculum using innovative instructional strategies.  Relevant partnerships will be developed with business, industry, and post-secondary institutions to ensure effective integration of STEM concepts and curriculum for all students.  Parental involvement and collaboration with both feeder & Innovation Zone schools will be a focus to ensure sustainability and long-term commitment by key stakeholders.

Diversity, Recruiting and Arts Integration through Hands-On African Drumming Residencies

Drawing on over a decade of experience in magnet schools across the country, the presenter will provide information on how existing magnet schools have successfully used hands-on residencies in African Drumming and Dancing to enhance school diversity, build recruitment opportunities, and integrate their curricula.  This session will integrate the concepts in Dr. Mickelson's review of her research on the relationships between school and classroom diversity and student academic achievement.  An instrument will be provided for each attendee, and the session will model the high-energy process of integrating African drumming into social studies, math, music and language arts curricula.
