Opening Session There are many areas of U.S. public policy in which decisions made by those in power run counter to what the social science evidence tells us they should be to solve the problems we all care about. Nowhere is this reality more stark than in the area of school diversity and the establishment of federal, state or even local policies to support and sustain racially or socio-economically balanced schools and/or school districts. Drawing on some of the most powerful evidence to date, Professor Wells will provide an overview of the robust body of research on the long-term effects of school desegregation on students who matriculate through diverse schools and the nation as a whole. She will also discuss how this growing body of research can and should have a powerful impact on current and future educational policies and for our increasingly diverse, 21st Century society.
Dr. Amy Stuart Wells, Professor of Sociology and Education |
| Opening Session What I Told Secretary of Education Duncan About School Diversity and Student Outcomes: Practical Implications for Magnet Schools - Broad findings about the positive relationship of school and classroom diversity to a host of long- and short-term student outcomes (general findings). - The opportunities for diversity AND excellence that magnet schools offer their communities at this point in time. - The constitutionally permissable enrollment strategies for creating, implementing, and sustaining diverse magnets (based on Justice Kennedy's controlling opinion in the Supreme Court's 2007 decision that recognized fostering diversity and avoiding segregation are compelling state interests). - Developing federal, state, and local stakeholders as partners or collaborators in creating, implementing, and sustaining diverse magnet schools.
