Gifted & Talented magnet schools and magnet schools for the academically gifted continue to draw high numbers of students, but how can districts ensure they are identifying and enrolling students into these programs equitably to ensure high standards and fairness, while avoiding expensive lawsuits? What Talent Development models exist and how could the Magnet Schools Assistance Program (MSAP) support these efforts.
Dr. Carolyn Callahan and Maree Sneed (Esq) will lead the discussion and address challenges and opportunities related to identification, talent development, and equitable access to programs.

A panel including representatives from College Board and magnet personnel from Hillsborough County Public Schools will discuss college readiness and access, one of the three critical areas of College Board advocacy work. They will address middle school AP strategies through theme-based education at Young Creative Science Centre, the specialized AP classes at Middle High School, the district's only pre-collegiate STEM academy and the pressing challenges of equity and access to rigorous academic, especially to underserved populations.

This webinar unpacks the attraction, risks, and rationale associated with workplace magnet schools - including, for example, diversity among workplace employees/families; shared and sometimes ample resources (e.g., health care professionals; technology); and parents' motivations for choosing choice schools (proximity to work, safety, quality). In sum, schools at the workplace may satisfy the key goals of magnet schools -- access, authenticity, innovation, and diversity, with notable risks and rewards. Findings from a project sponsored by The Spencer Foundation provide compelling field evidence of both benefits and conflicts.
