Sara Wheeler has over 40 years of experience in the field of education and is employed by District Five of Lexington & Richland Counties in Irmo, South Carolina. Ms. Wheeler has held a variety of positions throughout her career; classroom teacher, magnet school teacher, magnet school administrator, Smaller Learning Communities Site Coordinator and Project Director for three MSAP funded grants.

Ms. Wheeler is a graduate of the University of Georgia where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Education and went on to do her graduate work at Armstrong State University, Savannah State University and the University of South Carolina. She received her certification in Gifted Education from West Georgia University in Carrollton, Georgia. Ms. Wheeler holds a masters degree in education with certification in grades K-8 with a concentration in middle level education, K-12 gifted education and secondary social studies.

Ms. Wheeler served as the South Carolina Second Congressional District Coordinator for the Center for Civic Education and was instrumental in providing quality law related education throughout the state. She was named South Carolina Law Related Educator of the Year by the South Carolina State Bar Association and went on to be named the National Middle School Law Related Educator of the Year by the American Lawyers Auxiliary. Ms. Wheeler was also recognized as the 2010 Citizen of the Year for South Carolina by the South Carolina State Bar Association.

Among other recognitions, Ms. Wheeler has been a recipient of the Richland School District Two “World Class” Leadership Award presented annually by the Superintendent and served as the MEBA (Midlands Education and Business Alliance) chairperson for The Arts Career Cluster. Sara served on the South Carolina visiting site team for Making Middle Grades Work and High Schools That Work and also served as a grant reader for Charter School applications for the U.S. Department of Education.

Ms. Wheeler has presented at conferences locally, statewide and nationally on a variety of topics; gifted education, magnet schools and programs, service learning, civic programs, Core Knowledge, Law Related Education and grant projects. As a member of the Board of Directors for Magnet Schools of America, Sara has served as a Director At Large, Regional Director/Regional Chairperson, President-Elect, and now President.
